SilkAir Begins
Flying To Kathmandu
As per its plans, the subsidiary wing of the Singapore Airlines (SA) —
SilkAir started its three weekly flights on Singapore-Kathmandu sector
from October 30, 2007.
The carrier operates flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
SilkAir is the sixth foreign international airline to begin services in
Nepal within one year.
The carrier aims to tap leisure traffic out of Singapore, and facilitate
connections for customers from Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Europe,
which have been important tourist generating markets for Nepal.
Issuing a press statement, the airline said that the customers from
Kathmandu would get direct flights to Singapore and the convenience of
onward connections to more than 90 international cities in the joint SA-SilkAir
network.
The carrier would operate its flights using Airbus A320 family aircraft.
Together with the new routes, the number of the airline’s weekly flights
would exceed 400 flights to 29 destinations across 11 countries, the
statement said.
According to Chin Yau Seng, chief executive of SilkAir, its flights have
been booked up to the end of this year.
He said that the airline might increase its frequency in the near
future. “As Nepal is our new market, we will look at the response for
some months and make decisions accordingly,” he added.
Citing business slackness, Singapore Airlines pulled out its services in
Nepal from May 2002.
