Visit Pokhara Year -2007 Being Launched
The Visit Pokhara Year 2007 will be inaugurated amidst a ceremony in the
tourist hub city of Pokhara on January 1, 2007.
The event is going to be organized to highlight Nepal as a premier tourist
destination. The promotional campaign is being launched jointly by the
Government of Nepal, Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Pokhara Tourism Council.
The event, which will be inaugurated on 1st January 2007, aims to restore
Nepal’s image as a prime tourist destination to domestic, neighboring as
well as international tourists.
Announcing the event in Kathmandu on December 29, 2006, Secretary at the
Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Mr. Madhav Prasad Ghimire
said that the campaign would aim to promote Pokhara and the surrounding
destinations such as Lumbini, Palpa, Syangja and Tanahu.
He also expressed the belief that the promotional campaign would help
increase tourism activities in Nepal in the post-conflict situation.
The event also aims at giving a face-lift to the tourist attractions like
Phewa Lake, Begnas Lake and Buddhist circuits.
Similarly, Mr. Subash Nirola, Director at NTB, said that the event could
help increase the number of domestic tourists in Pokhara by about 40 percent
and international visitors by 25 percent.
Apart from increasing the number of visitors, efforts will be made for
infrastructure development, increasing community participation and
international publicity and promotion of Nepal during the Visit Pokhara Year
2007.
As the major gateway to the world-famous Annapurna Trekking Region and
several other destinations, Pokhara is one of the most popular tourist
attractions of Nepal. The lake city attracts about one-fourth of the total
tourist arrivals in the Himalayan country.

Air-Links Among SAARC Capitals To Be Set-Up
The SAARC (South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation) technical
committee on transport has called for the member countries to establish
direct air links among the capital cities and provide access to road network
in order to facilitate trade and economic integration in the region.
The meeting of SAARC Intergovernmental Group on Transportation, which was
concluded in Pakistan on December 27, 2006, emphasized the need to improve
transport and communication links among the SAARC capital cities. The
representatives of the member countries reached a consensus to develop
transport links among the countries.
The issue of transportation and communication links has come at a time when
the SAARC member states are implementing the South Asia Free Trade Agreement
(SAFTA).
Apart from this, the member countries were also urged to liberalize their
visa regimes to facilitate movement of people and strengthen
people-to-people contacts.
The meeting was focused on a common strategy for developing a viable and
interconnected communication network in the region. The member countries
have a lot to do to further improve air, road, rail and sea transportation
linkages.
The officials are said to have unanimously recommended that air links be
established among capital cities of the SAARC member countries. The meeting
also suggested that the respective governments should explore and work for
interconnecting highways and building a regional road network.

Statue of Rhino Being Built in Chitwan
In order to generate public awareness about the importance of the one-horned
rhinos and contribute to their protection, a statute of the species is being
built near the Narayani River at Narayanghat. The endangered species is
facing an increased threat due to poaching in the Chitwan National Park.
The 10-metre long and two-meter high statue will be unveiled during the
upcoming Chitwan festival. According to the organizers, a team of five
sculptors has been involved in making the statue, which will be the largest
one in Nepal.

Height of Everest to be Marked
The Nepalese and Chinese officials have exchanged their views about the
marking of the height of Mt. Everest (8,848m.) at the concluding day of the
fourth session of the Joint Inspection Committee (JIC) on December 27, 2006.
"As there are data incompatibilities due to the use of new technology in
survey and mapping, we need to mark the height of Mt. Everest,"said
Bhamindra Aryal, under secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The team will work out on incompatibilities of new data of boundary markers
with data of old map attached in the 1979 protocol. According to Mr. Aryal,
they used old technology in the previous survey but now they used
geographical information system (GIS). He said that they agreed to adjust
data in the next round. .
The two sides would carry out study whether there was new changes in the
height of Mt. Everest. They reviewed and summed up the fieldwork of joint
inspection teams carried from April to September 2006.
The Nepalese and Chinese officials and experts discussed on improving GIS of
Nepal-China boundary during three-day meeting.
The fifth JIC meeting in China in April next year.

China Southern flying to Kathmandu soon
China Southern Airlines is planning to operate its scheduled flights to the
capital city of Kathmandu from Guangzhou, a major business hub in China,
from the third week of January 2007.
According to the sources at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil
Aviation (MoCTCA), the airline has been given a green signal in this regard.
Officials at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) confirmed that the
Chinese airline has already applied for the permission. CAAN is said to be
in the process of permitting the airline to operate flights.
Sources said that the airline could use its Boeing 757 aircraft.
Nepal will have better air access to that part of China once the airline
starts flights to Kathmandu.
As Nepal is having durable peace, three airlines-- GMG Airlines from
Bangladesh, Air Arabia from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Korean Air
from South Korea—have already started flying to and from Kathmandu. Some
more airlines from South East and South Asia and the Middleeast are in the
process of operating flights to Kathmandu.

Nepal-Israel Sign Air Services Agreement
In a bid to increase air access between Nepal and Israel, the two countries
have signed an
Air Services Agreement (ASA).
The agreement was signed by Mr. Madhav Prasad Ghimire, Secretary at the
Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, and Israeli Ambassador to
Nepal Mr. Dan Stav on behalf of their respective governments amidst a
program held in Kathmandu on December 25, 2006.
Under the agreement, both the countries have entitled top designate airline
to operate air services between Nepal and Israel, four passenger and three
cargo flights per week.
Nepal has been one of the popular destinations for Israeli tourists with
about 7,000 Israelis visiting the Himalayan country each year. The operation
of the direct flights between the two countries is expected to increase
tourism cooperation in the days to come. Nepal has signed ASA's with more
than three dozens of countries.

Nepal Exempts VISA FEE for Japanese Nationals
The Government of Nepal has exempted visa fee for the Japanese nationals who
want to visit the Himalayan country as tourists. The government has
introduced the New Visa Provision on the occasion of the establishment of
the diplomatic ties between Nepal and Japan. The provision is effective from
December 2006, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The number of Japanese tourists to visit Nepal is expected to increase
significantly with the exemption of the visa fee. Japan has not only been a
major tourist generating market for Nepal but also a leading donor,
contributing to the country's development.
Similarly, the government has decided to issue visa for the ordinary
passport bearers of Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe and Swaziland. The visa is
issued from the Embassy of Nepal, Consulate General and Honorary Consulates.
Previously, visitors from these countries used to get on-arrival visa.
However, official passport bearers from these countries will be given
on-arrival visa. The provision has come into force from December 16, 2006.

Tibet Hikes Yatra Package for 2007
The Tibet has again increased their Price for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for
Indian Pilgrims for 2007. However the minimum number of person bracket of
group size visiting the Kailash has been reduced to 32 people contrary to 47
people in 2005 / 06.

More Tourists Visiting Nepal via India
The number of foreign tourists coming to Nepal via India has increased by
about three times during the first 11 months of 2006 as compared to the
figure of the same period of last year.
A total of 353 foreign tourists entered into Nepal through the Nepalgunj
entry point during the period this year. Only a total of 123 tourists had
come to the country from the entry point in 2005, according to the
immigration office based in Nepalgunj.
This year's number is reported to be the highest after 1998.
The tourists, who have entered Nepal via India, are from Britain, the United
States, Germany and France. The flow of Indian tourists has also increased
this year. Similarly, the number of tourists going to Manasarovar, Dolpa,
Bardiya National Park and other tourist areas via Kathmandu has also
increased.
In the meantime, about 576 tourists from various countries of the world
visited Rasuwa and the Langtang Region in the first 11 months of 2006.
News reports show that the number of German trekkers stood at 77, while 71
from Israel, 50 from England, 48 from France, 42 from the Netherlands, 36
from Japan, 31 from the United States, 28 from Australia, 23 from Singapore
and 22 each from South Korea and Belgium

FAM Trip for Japanese Journalists
A team of journalists from Japan have been on a familiarization trip to
Nepal between December 10 and 17, 2006. They are visiting different tourist
spots such as the Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara and the Annapurna region.
The team has been here at the invitation of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB),
in close coordination with Japan Alpine Club, Nepal Airlines Corporation,
Pokhara Tourism Council and the Nepalese tourism industry, on the occasion
of Golden Jubilee Celebration of Mt. Manaslu, 50th Anniversary of
Nepal-Japan Diplomatic Relations and Himalaya Tourism Conference 2006.
Mr. Kaoru Hashino, The Yomiuri News Paper; Mr. Koichiro Tezuka, The Mainichi
News Paper; Ms. Asako Sunagami, The Tokyo News Paper and Ms. Kimiko Ohata,
The Yamakei Publishers Co. Ltd., were the visiting journalists.
As they have visited various tourist destinations in Nepal, they are
expected to help promote mountain tourism and restore the country's past
image as a safe and peaceful tourist destination in the potential Japanese
market.

Int'l Elephant Race-2006 at Sauraha from Dec. 26
The International Elephant Race-2006 will be organized at Sauraha of Chitwan
from December 26 to 28. The event aims to promote Sauraha and the
surrounding areas as tourist destinations. Sauraha has been hosting he event
for the last three years.
Apart from the elephant race competition, various other programs will be
organized. Some of them include tour to the Elephant Breeding Centre, local
art exhibition and holding of the Tharu cultural program.
An estimated 30,000 tourists are expected to visit Sauraha during the
festival time.

Kathmandu Temperature Plummets Due to Drizzle
The capital city of Kathmandu has witnessed a dramatic decline in
temperature due to drizzle on December 11, 2006. The temperature of the
capital valley has gone down to about
4 Degree Celsius.
During the last 24 hours, Kathmandu recorded 0.7 mm, while Dang received the
highest rainfall of about 13 mm., Dadeldhura western part of Nepal got 12
mm, Nepalgunj 12.8, Birendra Nagar 10, Dhangadi 11.2.
The change in weather has affected life in Kathmandu. The number of
pedestrians walking long and the vehicles playing the roads and streets of
the city decreased significantly because of the changed weather.
However, meteorologists have called it a normal phenomenon.
They said that today's rainfall is the result of the cold wind blowing from
the west and the weather would improve gradually in the days to come.
Temperature in some other parts of the country such as Jumla and Jiri
declined significantly.
Some of the regular domestic and international flights have been disturbed
because of the weather change.
According to the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Qatar Airways and
Korean Airways had to divert their flights as they could not land at TIA
Airport.
Most of the flights to various domestic destinations like Pokhara, Bharatpur,
Bhairahawa, Janakpur, Simara, Bhadrapur, and Ramechhap were also disrupted.

Paragliding Competition from January 25 in Pokhara
With a view to promoting a myriad of tourist attractions of Pokhara and the
surrounding areas, the Trekking Agents Association of Nepal (TAAN) Western
Regional Chapter Pokhara will organize the 8th Nepal Open Paragliding
Competition 2007 in Pokhara between January 25th and January 27th, 2007.
The tourist hub city of Pokhara is the major gateway to the world-famous
trekking destination—the Annapurna Circuit. Popularly known as the lake
city, Pokhara is not only rich in scenic beauty and biodiversity but also
holds unique harmony of different ethnic and cultural groups.
As adventure Tourist destination, Nepal had begun to be known to the outside
world following the the successful human ascent of Mt. Annapurna I in 1950.
Keeping these facts in mind, the TAAN Western Regional Chapter Pokhara has
been organizing such an adventure tourism event annually since 1999.
The pilots will take off from Sarangkot and land at Lakeside, according to
Mr. Tikaram Sapkota, coordinator of the main organizing committee.
A number of cultural programs like duet will be organized during the time.
Foreign and Nepali pilots, who are interested to participate in the event,
will have to pay US$ 25 and Rs. 1,000 as participation fee respectively.
The participant, who will present the best performance, will be awarded a
medal and certificate along with Rs. 15,000 in cash. An estimated 100 pilots
from home and aboard are expected to take part in the event this year.

Int'l Mountain Film Festival Kicks Off in Nepal
A five-day Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival ( KIMFF) 2006 has
kicked off from Thursday, December 7, 2006.
Inaugurated by Mr. Nazir Sabir, Pakistani mountaineer and conservationist,
the festival would feature some of the best films based on mountains,
mountain people and mountain sports. The films depict several subjects such
as culture, climbing, wildlife, environment, globalization, conflict,
gender, and lifestyle, according to the organizers.
More than 70 films, documentaries, features and animations will be screened
at the Russian Cultural Centre, Kamal Pokhari, Tourist Service Centre,
Bhrikuti Mandap and Gurukul, Old Baneshwor.
The festival is organized every two years.

Arrivals Up by 7% in Nepal
The number of foreign tourists, who came to Nepal by air in the month of
November this year, went up by about 7% as compared to figure of the
corresponding month of 2005.
The Information was disclosed by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil
Aviation.
During the month, a total of 29,407 visitors visited Nepal. The major market
segments were India (23%), Japan (11%), British (8%), America (6.8%) and
Germany (5.9%).
As the peace process is gaining momentum with the historic peace accord
signed between the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) Government and the Communist
party of Nepal (Maoist), the Nepalese Tourism Industry has started to show
some signs of REVIVAL.

The above mentioned Expedition team comprising of 6 members was permitted to
climb 8163 m. high Mt. Manaslu from classical Japanese Route for the period
of 75 days from 8th September, 2006 under the leadership of Mr.Yoshitomi
Okura of Japan. Mr. Sherap Jangbu Sherpa has successfully climbed the
Mountains which are above 8000 meters high for 15th time and he climbed 10
peaks among the highest 14 peaks of Himalayas.

As per the Press Released issued by Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civial
Aviation following five members of "Japan Alpine Club Panbari Himal
Expedition 2006" team climbed Mt. Panbari team (6887 meter high) on 29th
September, 2006.

The above mentioned Expedition of Japan Alpine Club Panbari Himal Expedition
2006 team was permitted to climb 6997m. high Mt. Panbari from South face for
the period of 45 days from 22 August, 2006 under the leadership of Mr.
Yoshimi Kato of Japan.

As per the Press Released issued by Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civial
Aviation following two members and two climbing Sherpas, are missing on camp
III while they were sleeping at the height of 6,400m of Mt. Ama Dablam
(6,812m) at 12:00 midnight on 13 November, 2006. The members and the
climbing Sherpas are of "Climb High Ama Dablam Expedition 2006" comprising
of 7 members. The expedition team was permitted to climb 6,812m high Mt. Ama
Dablam from Normal Route for the period of 45 days from 30th October 2006
under the leadership of Mr. Maciej Berbeka of Poland.
